Diplomacy education

The program

The program

Diplomacy Education® is the first project officially launched by Global Action in January 2018 at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of the then Minister Angelino Alfano.

Each year, the project involves around seventy embassies and international missions in Rome, as well as numerous international organizations such as the United Nations (WFP, FAO, IFAD), IILA and the European Commission Representation in Italy.

During the first seven editions, the project involved more than 6000 students from Italian schools, together with students from developing countries, participating thanks to scholarships provided by our partners.

The central pillar of the project revolves around understanding the activities and processes carried out within the following institutions and organizations:

● Foreign Embassies and Consulates in Italy;
● Permanent missions in Italy;
● International organizations in Italy and abroad;
● Non-governmental organizations;
● Italian embassies abroad.

Program objectives

  • To build bridges between the local and international communities with a cross-cutting educational approach;
  • Strengthen students’ cultural and communication skills by supporting diplomatic institutions in their public diplomacy mandate;
  • Build informed knowledge and provide students with a broader view of current international issues, developing their critical thinking skills;
  • Expand students’ sense of belonging to the human community, its values, responsibilities and goals, respecting the different visions that students will face in their life journey;
  • To develop the right motivation to become active members of their communities to act locally, nationally or internationally for a more sustainable, equitable and peaceful world.

Critical aspects of the program

  • Completely free of charge for both partners and participants;
  • Involves a wide network of partners, including some 70 embassies in Rome and permanent missions to the UN, Rome-based UN agencies, IILA and EU institutions in Rome;
  • Open to all Italian and international high school students from developing countries, thanks to Global Action’s visiting program;
  • The program is conducted in four working languages: English, French, Italian and Spanish (with special arrangements for Chinese and German-speaking embassies and schools).
How it works

The steps of Diplomacy Education

Diplomacy Education aims to connect students to the diplomatic community through a two-stage programme: The Embassy Adoption Programme® (EAP) and the Global Action Model United Nations (GAMUN). After a selection process, teachers and students are matched with an embassy or mission participating in the project. From then on, the embassy/mission officially ‘adopts’ the students. The learning pathway begins and follows the following steps:

01.

THE EMBASSY AT SCHOOL

The ambassador or a diplomat visits their assigned school and introduces their country to the class, which is then ‘adopted’.

During the meeting, the students will have the opportunity to ask any question, without restrictions. They may explore topics concerning the country’s religion, discuss political issues, or satisfy their curiosity about cultural differences.

02.

THE EMBASSY CLASS

The class will have the opportunity to visit the Embassy of their adopted country, participating in an office tour and observing at first hand the work of a diplomat accredited to the Quirinale or the United Nations.

This experience will give students a concrete understanding of the role of an ambassador abroad and the importance of maintaining close relations between often very different nations.

03.
SIDE EVENTS: SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES

In this phase, students take part in workshops, cultural and social events, seminars and conferences organised by Global Action, embassies or affiliated bodies.

These events offer students the opportunity to learn more about the dynamics of their country of study, covering a wide range of topics, from local culture, history, traditions, art and gastronomy to more sensitive and current issues, such as sustainable development policies, gender equality and humanitarian initiatives promoted by the country.

04.
UNITED NATIONS SIMULATION (GAMUN)

Students will be assigned to different United Nations agencies and will address specific issues related to each agency, representing the point of view of the country they have been partnered with during the year.

During the United Nations Simulation (GAMUN), each country will meet within its committee and work to draft one or more resolutions to address the assigned issues. This moment will be an opportunity for confrontation and exchange between different knowledge and cultures.

05.
DIPLOMAT FOR A DAY

‘Starting with this edition, we are pleased to introduce a new initiative called ‘Diplomat for a Day’. This unique programme will offer one carefully selected student the extraordinary opportunity to shadow the Ambassador for an entire day. This immersive experience will give the chosen student an exclusive insight into the inner workings of diplomacy, observing first-hand how international relations are conducted and how critical decisions are made. During this day, the student will be able to participate in official diplomatic engagements and accompany the Ambassador in his or her daily activities. This will provide them with invaluable perspectives on the complexities of representing a nation abroad, the art of negotiation and the importance of fostering international partnerships. It is an unparalleled opportunity for students to put themselves in the shoes of a diplomat and understand the subtleties of global diplomacy beyond the textbooks

Diplomacy Education Program

2020-2021

Despite the difficulties imposed by the Covid-19 global emergency, Global Action continued to pursue its mission. Even in the complex year 2020, our students were able to participate in the Diplomacy Education Program online, without interrupting their education and adapting to new challenges with resilience and commitment.

Results 2023-2024

During this intense and fruitful year, Global Action, thanks to the valuable work of its volunteers and the invaluable support of its partners, managed to

Organize more than 50 meetings between Rome-based Embassies/Missions and around 30 Italian high schools, as part of the Diplomacy Education program, to discuss diplomacy, countries of the world, climate change, gender equality and many other topics.

Involve more than 900 students in its Diplomacy Education program, where they played the role of delegates, social media managers, journalists, experts, photographers, acquiring crucial skills useful for the job market.

Welcome two international students from Malaysia, who had the unique opportunity to visit Rome for a week and participate in the Global Action Model United Nations (GAMUN) at one of the Rome-based UN agencies, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Host the GAMUN Opening Ceremony, several working committees and the GAMUN Closing Ceremony at IFAD Headquarters, with students, high-level diplomats and VIP guests.

Work with 20 university students, who did internships with Global Action, leading international education projects and acquiring practical project management and other skills useful for their future careers.
